Overview

Bathroom sink clogs are 95% hair and soap — and 95% fixable in one visit

When a bathroom sink stops draining, it's almost always a hair-and-soap mat tangled around the pop-up stopper or a few inches into the trap. Long hair gets caught on the stopper, soap scum builds around the hair, and within a year you've got a felt-like wad that water can't flow through. We pull the stopper, clean the trap, and cable the line in 30-45 minutes flat. Most clogs never need anything more aggressive than a hand auger.

Bathroom sink clogs differ from kitchen clogs in two important ways: they're rarely caused by grease, and they're usually within 18 inches of the drain. That makes them faster and cheaper to clear, with less risk of pushing the clog deeper.

What we clear

  1. Hair + soap mat at the stopper — the #1 bathroom sink clog. Pull the stopper, clean it, done.
  2. Hair clog deeper in the trap — past the stopper but before the wall. Trap removal + hand cable.
  3. Toothpaste / cosmetic / shaving cream buildup — sticky residue that grabs hair and scale.
  4. Foreign objects — hair tie, jewelry, kid's toy, contact lens. We catch in the bucket, return what's worth returning.
  5. Pop-up stopper failure — clog gone but stopper won't seal/seat properly anymore. Replace the pop-up assembly.
  6. Vent or downstream issues — gurgling after drain clears, multiple bathrooms backing up at once. Different fix.

What we use

  • Stopper pull + manual clean — most bathroom clogs, 15-30 minutes, $129-$185
  • Trap drop + hand cable — clog past the stopper, 30-60 minutes, $145-$245
  • Drum auger — rare for bathroom sinks; only when clog is well past the trap, $185-$385
  • Pop-up assembly replacement — old/corroded stopper that grabs every clog, $145-$285

Utah-specific bathroom clog issues

Hard water builds calcium scale on the inside of the trap and the pop-up linkage. Hair grabs scale, soap builds on hair, and the cycle accelerates. Soft-water homes have noticeably fewer recurrent clogs.

Old chrome pop-ups on vintage Utah homes (1950s-70s vanities) are often pitted and rough — they catch hair like Velcro. Replacing the pop-up assembly with a modern lift-and-turn or push-pull design eliminates 80% of recurring hair clogs.

What Valley does differently

Same-day scheduling. Flat-rate pricing — we tell you the price before any tools come off the truck. We pull stoppers and clean traps as the default first attempt, not the fallback. All work comes with a 30-day warranty on the same clog. Quality Service Club members get 15% off and priority dispatch.

Warning signs

Signs Your Bathroom Sink Is Clogged

Catch it slow — a slow drain becomes standing water in 1-2 weeks of normal use.

  • Water drains slowly, takes 20+ seconds to clear basin

  • Standing water in the basin after washing hands

  • Pop-up stopper won't seal or seat properly

  • Bad smell coming from the drain

  • Gurgling sound when water finally drains

  • Hair visibly visible on the pop-up when lifted

  • Sink takes 5+ minutes to fully empty

  • Water bubbles back up briefly after running

  • Repeated clog within 30-60 days of last clearing

  • Two bathrooms backing up at once (mainline issue, not branch)

Stop the recurrence

A $35 hair guard saves you 3 service calls a year.

Most repeat clogs are hair. Drop in a hair guard at the stopper and you'll never call about this drain again.

The Process

How a Bathroom Sink Clog Call Works

  1. Quick assessment

Tech tests the sink, lifts the pop-up to check for hair, and diagnoses whether the clog is at the stopper, in the trap, or past the wall. Most bathroom clogs are at the stopper or trap — fast fix.

  2. Flat-rate quote

Stopper clean, trap drop + cable, or pop-up replacement — you see all three prices before we start. We default to the smallest tool that will clear the clog.

  3. Pull stopper + clean

Lift the pop-up, pull the linkage, clean off the hair and soap mat into a bucket. Reset the stopper and test. About half the time, this alone clears the clog.

  4. Drop trap + cable if needed

If clog persists past the stopper, we drop the trap, run a small hand cable through the wall stub-out, work the clog free. 30-60 minutes for a standard cable job.

  5. Test full flow

Run the sink fully open for 60+ seconds, fill basin and release with stopper closed and open, listen for gurgles. Verify drain rate matches a clean line.

  6. 30-day warranty

Same clog comes back within 30 days, we re-clear at no charge. Most bathroom clogs stay cleared 1-3+ years with normal use.
