Hydro Jetting

HYDRO JETTING — PIPE-WALL CLEAN, NOT JUST A PUNCH-THROUGH

3,500+ PSI of water scours grease, scale, and small roots off the pipe wall. The only drain cleaning method that actually cleans the pipe — not just punches a hole through the clog.

Overview

What hydro jetting actually does to your line

A drain snake works by punching a hole through the middle of a clog so water starts moving again. Hydro jetting works by scrubbing the entire inside wall of the pipe clean. Different tools, different results. If your kitchen line keeps clogging every six months, a snake isn't solving it — the grease layer coating the pipe is still there, narrowing the line, and a fresh clog is already forming. Jetting strips that layer off.

A hydro jetter is essentially a pressure washer designed for the inside of a pipe. A high-pressure hose with a specialized nozzle is fed down the cleanout. The nozzle shoots water forward to break up the blockage and rearward to pull the hose deeper and blast the pipe wall clean as it moves. Residential jetters run 3,500 to 4,000 PSI at 4-8 gallons per minute. Commercial jetters push 4,000-5,000 PSI at 18+ GPM for restaurant grease traps and 4"+ mains.

When hydro jetting is the right call

  1. Recurring kitchen clogs — grease coats the pipe wall and no cable clears it fully
  2. Cast iron mains built 1950-1970 — scale buildup (tuberculation) narrows the pipe by 30-50% over decades
  3. Small root intrusion — roots under 1/4" can be sheared off with a root-cutting nozzle; bigger root problems need repair, not jetting
  4. Commercial lines — restaurant kitchens, apartment buildings, car washes, anywhere grease or soap scum builds up fast
  5. Pre-inspection prep — before running a camera you want a clean pipe so the lens can actually see the pipe wall
  6. Post-hydro maintenance — once we jet a commercial line, we usually set a 6 or 12-month schedule to keep it that way

When hydro jetting is the wrong call

We'll tell you. Jetting a pipe with a structural crack, a belly, or a collapsed section just makes the problem worse — you're blasting water at a damaged wall and potentially washing dirt into a widening gap. If the camera shows structural damage, we stop and price a repair instead of jetting a pipe that needs replacing.

What Valley brings to the job

Every drain truck on our fleet carries a residential jetter. We have dedicated commercial jetting rigs for restaurants and property managers running 4" and larger mains. Our techs run a camera before and after on most jet jobs — you see the grease coating in the before shot, and you see bare pipe wall in the after shot. No guessing, no "trust me, it worked."

Pricing is flat-rate and quoted upfront. Residential jetting runs $450 to $950 depending on line length and how much is in there. Commercial starts at $650 and scales with pipe size and severity. No hourly creep.

If you're seeing the same kitchen line clog twice a year or you own a restaurant, ask about maintenance jetting — once or twice a year at a locked rate keeps the line clear and kills the recurring emergency calls.

Warning signs

Signs Your Line Needs Jetting, Not Just a Snake

A snake will open a line. Jetting is what you call when you're tired of opening the same line over and over.

  • Same kitchen drain has clogged twice or more in the past 18 months

  • Cable snake works for a few weeks, then the clog comes right back

  • Slow drainage across multiple fixtures tied to the same branch line

  • Restaurant, bakery, or food service kitchen with chronic grease buildup

  • Home built before 1980 with original cast iron sewer mains

  • Laundry floor drain backs up when the washer dumps

  • Recurring sewer odor in basement or utility room

  • Camera inspection shows a layer of sludge coating the pipe wall

  • Apartment, duplex, or HOA main line with heavy shared use

  • Water backs up briefly when the dishwasher runs

Pipe-wall clean

Stop snaking the same line four times a year.

A snake opens a hole. A jetter scrubs the whole pipe. If you're tired of the cycle, this is the fix.

The Process

How a Hydro Jetting Job Runs

Valley Plumbing hydro jet truck with high-pressure hose feeding into a Salt Lake City cleanout

On the truck

Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.

  1. Camera inspection first

We run a camera down the line before jetting. Two reasons — confirm jetting is the right tool (not a broken pipe that needs repair), and size the pressure and nozzle correctly for what we're dealing with.

  2. Stage the cleanout

Access matters. We pull the cleanout cap, set up containment for splashback, and position the jetter's hose reel to match pipe orientation. Working through a roof vent or pulled toilet adds cost — cleanout access is always fastest.

  3. Select nozzle and pressure

Standard flush nozzle for grease and soft buildup. Root-cutting nozzle for small root intrusion. Chain-knocker for heavy scale. Residential is 3,500-4,000 PSI, commercial mains run up to 5,000 PSI.

  4. Jet the full line

Hose feeds down to the furthest point, then we work it back in sections, scrubbing the pipe wall in both directions. Takes 45 minutes for a standard residential kitchen line, up to 3 hours for a commercial main.

  5. Post-jet camera and flow test

We run the camera back down the clean pipe so you see the result. Flow test confirms normal drainage at every affected fixture. If maintenance jetting makes sense, we schedule the next visit before we leave.
