Overview
What a sewer camera actually shows you
A camera inspection is the only way to know what's actually happening inside your sewer line. A clog could be hair and grease. It could also be a root mat from the neighbor's cottonwood. It could be a pipe belly where the soil settled 3 inches in 1978 and water's been pooling ever since. You can't guess from the outside — you look.
Our techs run a self-leveling camera on a push-rod down the cleanout. You watch on the monitor with the tech — no staring at the ceiling wondering what's happening below you. The camera transmits a locator signal so if we find a problem, we can mark the exact spot on the yard or slab above. Recording is included and we send you the video file and still images when the job's done.
When you should scope the sewer
- Before buying a home — this is the #1 reason people call us. Home inspections don't include sewer lines. A $195 scope has saved Utah buyers five-figure surprise repair bills more times than we can count, especially on homes built 1950-1975 with original clay or cast iron mains
- Recurring clogs in the same line — if the same drain backs up more than once a year, something's wrong with the pipe, not the fixture
- Multiple drains backing up at once — almost always a main line issue
- Sewer smell in the basement or yard — gas shouldn't escape a sealed system
- Wet spots in the yard where the sewer line runs
- After heavy tree work — root intrusion can start or worsen when nearby trees are removed or cut back
- Before a major plumbing upgrade — a new water heater or repipe is a good time to scope the main while we're there anyway
What we typically find
In the Salt Lake Valley, the usual suspects by neighborhood. Sugar House, Rose Park, East Bench homes built pre-1960: cast iron tuberculation (scale narrowing the pipe by 30-50%), partial offsets at joints, occasional clay lateral from house to main. 1960s-1980s suburbs (Taylorsville, Kearns, West Valley): cast iron mains, sometimes Orangeburg tar-paper pipe that's crushed or collapsed. Newer builds (Daybreak, Herriman, Lehi): usually PVC in good shape, occasional construction debris or improper backfill settling that causes bellies.
What Valley does differently
We run the camera with you watching. No "trust me, there's a root mat" followed by a giant repair quote. You see what we see, on the monitor, in real time. If we find nothing, we tell you nothing's wrong — we don't invent repairs. Inspection fee is $195 and it's fully waived if you move forward with a recommended repair with us. We send you the video and photos in a shareable link within 24 hours.
If the camera finds a real problem, you get three price points on the fix — spot repair (trenchless or dig), main sewer lining for a full pipe rehab, or full replacement. You pick based on your budget, how long you plan to stay, and what makes sense. No pressure.

Reasons to Scope the Line
If any of these apply to you, a 30-minute camera inspection is the difference between guessing and knowing.
You're buying a home built before 1980 — sewer lines are not part of a standard home inspection
The same drain has backed up more than twice in the past year
Multiple drains are sluggish at the same time
You can smell sewer gas in the basement or near a floor drain
There's a wet or mushy spot in the yard above where the sewer line runs
Toilet water level drops on its own between flushes
Big cottonwood, maple, or elm within 20 feet of the sewer line
You just had a contractor quote a sewer replacement — get a second opinion first
Previous owner mentioned a sewer issue that was never fully documented
Planning a remodel or addition that will sit over the sewer line

Buying a home?
A $195 scope beats a $15,000 surprise.
Sewer lines aren't in the home inspection. If the house was built before 1980, this is the single best due-diligence spend you can make.

The Process
How a Camera Inspection Runs

On the truck
Cable machine, jetter, and pipe camera — every call.
Access the cleanout
Sewer cleanouts are usually front yard, basement, or on the side of the house. If there's no cleanout we may pull a toilet or go through a roof vent — slightly more time, same result.
Camera down the line
Self-leveling head with LED ring light, pushed on a stiff fiberglass rod. Most Utah houses have 70 to 150 feet of line from cleanout to city main — takes about 15-20 minutes to cover the full run at inspection speed.
Live monitoring — you watch with us
Tech narrates what the camera sees. Pipe material, joints, scale, roots, bellies, cracks — called out as we find them. You see the monitor and can ask questions on the spot.
Mark the problem location
If there's a defect, we use the transmitter on the camera head and a handheld locator to mark the spot on the ground above — within inches of the exact depth and location. Critical for accurate repair quotes.
Report, video, and options
You get a written inspection summary, the raw video file, and still images sent to you within 24 hours. If repair is needed, we quote it three ways — spot repair, lining, or replacement — and let you decide.
